Octavius
Criptid Class: Excalibur
SubClass: Natural
ID: C-0001
Role: DNA sample provider
Species: Octopus lama
Current Location: Local 03
Nickname: Octavius
Description:
C-0001 is an anomalistic common octopus found by Researcher Allen {Zeus Rank;LOCAL03}.
The creature possesses high level intelligence, being comparable to intelligence expected from a 10 to 12 year old human child. Besides this anomaly, it has seemingly been alive for over 5 years, this exceeding the expected lifespan of the supposed species. The only real anomaly might be the ladder one, the increased intelligence being simply a byproduct of a longer life, as having had more time to learn, the creature’s intellect might have increased.
Discovery:
Researcher Allen received information, from a source infiltrated within the Matomato tribe, about a certain rumor of a creature inhabiting the swamps, which continuously stole fish and tools from the tribe.
After requesting permission to launch an investigation, and having it granted, he set up an observation zone surrounding the last reported location of the illusive creature. With multiple cameras all over the swamp, the researcher began monitoring for anything out of the ordinary. Eventually, a strange structure rose from the water, and, using a camera drone, the researcher discovered the strange structure to be a damaged rudimentary fish trap, seemingly woven together from sticks, weeds and algae.
Researcher Allen proceeded to set traps around different areas of the small body of water, and camped nearby constantly monitoring all of the traps via cameras. During the night, one of the traps was set off, and, in the monitor corresponding to it the researcher saw a small octopus struggling to free itself from the net. Researcher Allen quickly moved towards the trapped octopus’ location, only to find a cut net, without a single sign of the creature.
Researcher Allen contacted Local 03 the next morning, and requested the help of Task Force Artemis with capturing the creature. This request was promptly denied, there was no proof that it could be useful to the Project. Instead, Researcher Allen was allowed to resume his attempts to capture the elusive creature alone.
Only three days later, the creature was captured after being caught in a trap consisting of a large open container that, after the entry of the creature while chasing a crab, was closed by a net by the researcher himself.
Finally, the creature was brought into Project custody at LOCAL 03.
Use:
Octavius has become a helpful asset in the creation of any cephalopod cryptid, his DNA has been used in many projects and its intelligence has helped understand natural non-human intelligence, as most sentient cryptids are created using human DNA. This understanding of how other non-human intelligent species behave and think has helped further the research into how alien armies might coordinate and think, helping in the Project’s grand goal of preventing, and defending humanity from, extra-terrestrial attacks and invasions, such as the two “Savage Invasions”.
Housing, Care and Diet:
Octavius was originally housed in a 50 gallon aquarium near the Small Aquatics Area in LOCAL 03, but has recently been moved to LOCAL 03’s personnel headquarters in order to receive more visits from Researcher Allen, with whom the octopus has created a form of friendship with.
Octavius isn’t like the common Octopus Vulgaris, as this octopus is adapted for life in a freshwater environment, and therefore his aquarium is not a saltwater aquarium. The tank water is kept at approximately 23ºC, and Octavius is fed ghost shrimp, along with diverse fish, every day, either by Researcher Allen, or a substitute whenever the former isn’t present.
Notes:
Due to its intelligence Octavius has learned rudimentary written English, being capable of reading and writing in order to communicate with Project personnel. Octavius, as previously mentioned, has garnered some degree of affection towards Researcher Allen, who is capable of “controlling” Octavius’ more violent tendencies.
Many have speculated how this being came into existence, given its multiple unique features, including its intelligence, extended lifespan and overall behaviour, it seemed unlikely that this creature is the product of natural mutation. For the first weeks, most agreed that C-0001 was the result of genetically modifying an Octopus Vulgaris, this procedure having been performed by an unknown entity engaging in similar applications of genetic engineering as the Project, however, the Matomato tribe continued reporting to Researcher Allen’s contact sightings of mysterious creatures inhabiting the swamps. Octavius, upon learning the word “family”, and understanding the concepts implied and associated with the word, expressed a great desire to return to the swamps where he had been found, a request denied by Alexander Alpin himself.
Currently, the most accepted theory regarding the origin of Octavius is that he is part of an undiscovered species, although concrete proof is yet to be found. The origin of the species itself however is still debated, and many continue to believe it’s origin to be artificial, as no species such as this Octopus Lama, was recorded to have been brought to the Ovhar System by the Arks.
